Zimbabwe's electoral commission released the first result Wednesday from a recount of 23 legislative districts, but it still has not said who won the March 29 presidential election. The recount confirmed initial results showing that President Robert Mugabe's party had won a seat in the lower house of parliament. The seat is from one of 23 districts where Mugabe's party, ZANU-PF, has alleged irregularities.Because of the allegations, the commission took to recounting votes -- even though it has yet to release any result from the presidential election.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) lost in several efforts to have the High Court order the electoral commission to release results from the presidential election.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he won the presidency and that the government has engaged in violent retaliation against opposition supporters.
