The QC who led the inquiry into the "baby-harvesting" scandal at Alder Hey hospital is to investigate the unauthorised use of body tissue from Sellafield nuclear workers, the government announced today.Reacting swiftly to the overnight revelation that 65 deceased workers had had body parts taken without permission, the trade and industry secretary, Alistair Darling, announced a formal inquiry under Michael Redfern QC to MPs today.
Mr Darling warned that there was a great deal of confusion around the 65 cases, saying there was "no audit trail" in most cases, and it was "not clear what procedures were followed."
The minister announced that the inquiry would look at why tissue was taken, if next of kin were informed, if proper procedures were followed and how the subsequent data was used.
