Weather extremes battered Europe on Monday as torrential rains flooded England, including the famed Thames River, and record heat roasted central and southeastern Europe.Extreme heat has been blamed for at least 19 deaths from Austria to Romania in the past week.
In Britain, many rivers were near 60-year highs after several days of rain. More than 2,500 homes and businesses are swamped and tens of thousands of people were without water and electricity. More rain was forecast for today.
Last month, parts of many cities in northern and central England were under water during the country's wettest June ever recorded. The Association of British Insurers on Sunday estimated record flood damage costs of at least $4 billion.
