An Immigration and Refugee Appeal Board judge has been accused of propositiong a refugee claimant in exchange for a favourable response to the woman's application.CTV News obtained video of the judge suggesting to a South Korean woman that he would approve her refugee application if she had an affair with him.
The video, shot by the woman's boyfriend, shows the judge meeting with the claimant outside of his chambers, the broadcaster reported yesterday.
The judge said he planned to deport her but had second thoughts.
In a statement released yesterday, IRB chairman Jean-Guy Fleury did not confirm the CTV report, but said that last week he learned of allegations of a "serious breach" of the board's code of conduct. The allegations relate to a case before the Refugee Protection Division of the IRB in Toronto. An investigation has been launched and the accused removed from hearing cases pending the probe's outcome.
