Canoe Man" John Darwin, who was presumed dead until he walked into a London police station earlier this month, appeared in court in northern England Monday. The 57-year-old appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates' Court accused of making an untrue statement to procure a passport and of obtaining £25,000 ($50,000) by deception, a spokewoman for the magistrates' court told CNN.He entered no plea, the spokeswoman said.
The £25,000 was obtained through a cash transfer relating to a life insurance policy according to the charge sheet, the spokeswoman said.
Darwin's court appearance came a day after his wife, Anne, was arrested by police after she flew in to Britain on a flight from the United States.
