Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been appointed special envoy to the Middle East, a statement for the the Quartet of Mideast peace mediators has confirmed.In a joint written statement Wednesday, the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations announced the appointment of Blair, following days of growing speculation that he would be named as Mideast peace envoy.
The statement came hours after Blair stepped down from government after a decade in power. (Full story)
"Recent events in Gaza and the West Bank make it more urgent than ever that we advance the search for peace in the Middle East," the statement said.
