A woman who disappeared while on a hunting trip in Oregon almost two weeks ago was found alive Thursday afternoon, just two days before a memorial service was to take place. Ora Doris Anderson, 76, was found "in extremely rough terrain deep in a canyon" in the Wallowa Mountains by an Oregon state trooper and a Baker County sheriff's deputy who were looking on their own in an area previously searched, according to a statement from the Baker County Sheriff's Department. The search had been officially called off August 31, and the family had planned a memorial service for this weekend.
After following the sound of birds singing, Deputy Travis Ash and Senior Trooper Chris Hawkins found Anderson conscious and talking beside Bennett Creek.
She apparently had suffered a hip injury but was alert as she was removed from the canyon and flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Baker City, Oregon, a hospital official said. She is listed in critical but stable condition, said spokesman George Winn.
