The first six months of this year offered up record-breaking weather in the USA.Two states — Alabama and Mississippi — had the driest January-June period in their history while, 150 miles away, Texas had one of its wettest ever. Heat and cold ruined crops. Storms killed more than 100 people and caused millions in property damage.
Weather's impact month by month
January: Ice and snow blankets much of the country, and 60 people die in Jan. 12-17 storms that stretch from Texas through the Midwest and into New England. Oklahoma suffers 23 storm-related deaths. In the West, low temperatures cause an estimated $1 billion in damage to fruit crops in California. Phoenix gets its first subfreezing low in more than 15 years.
