Workers found Friday the body of one of two miners missing after a collapse at an open-pit coal mine in western Maryland, a federal mine official said. The body was in a battered backhoe the man was operating Tuesday when a section of the high wall collapsed, burying the equipment beneath tons of rock and dirt, said Bob Cornett, acting regional director for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Workers have not yet been able to see into a bulldozer that the other missing miner was using, Cornett said.
Both pieces of equipment were spotted Thursday night after workers removed thousands of tons of debris from the site. The vehicles, found side by side, were extensively damaged.
