Tropical Storm Barry formed in the Gulf of Mexico and set sail for Florida on Friday -- the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season.Barry is the second named storm of the year, after Subtropical Storm Andrea made its debut May 9.
In an 8 p.m. ET advisory, the National Hurricane Center said that Barry's sustained winds had increased to about 50 mph. The storm was about 320 miles southwest of Tampa and about 235 west of Key West.
It had been "meandering" for the last three hours, the center said, but was expected to begin a northward movement at about 12 mph later in the evening, and to turn north-northeastward in the next 24 hours.
