The southbound lanes of Highway 101 on the mid-Peninsula have reopened but the northbound lanes will likely remain closed until Wednesday morning's commute, authorities said. The freeway was shut down in the afternoon when a tanker trailer partially overturned in Redwood City and spilled an estimated 2,000 gallons of gasoline across the northbound lanes, into a storm drain at the center divide and underneath the southbound lanes of the highway.
Cleanup proved harder than expected as crews worked into the late night with changing estimates as to when the highway could reopen. The southbound lanes reopened around 10:30 p.m.
Although the tanker trailer has been hauled away from northbound lanes, authorities say they may have to repave the section of highway because of asphalt deteroriation caused by the spilled gasoline. The repaving would be done overnight and authorities hope to have the northbound lanes reopened between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday.
