San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey was walloping a deputy seeking to oust him from his job in early returns Tuesday night, making the incumbent likely to cruise to a record eighth term in office.Hennessey was leading Deputy Sheriff David Wong by 70 percent to 29 percent in early returns Tuesday. Since winning his first election in 1979, Hennessey has never received less than 80 percent of the vote.
Only absentee ballots that arrived by Monday were counted on election day - a total of just over 48,000.
Wong, who has been a deputy for 16 years, opposed Hennessey because he said the sheriff is not aggressive enough in his administration of the department. Wong is the head of the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs' Association.
