San Francisco voters appeared to overwhelmingly approve Proposition G on Tuesday, endorsing plans for a major housing and commercial development at the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point and also keeping alive hope of holding on to the 49ers football team.Mayor Gavin Newsom's administration and executives with developer Lennar Corp. cheered the apparent victory as well as the parallel defeat of a measure that would have required half of the new homes to be affordable to low- and moderate-income residents.
Proposition F supporters had argued that their measure would address the housing needs in the poor and crime-ridden neighborhood, but developers said it was a poison pill that would have made the huge project economically infeasible.
Newsom said the election result would improve the entire city.
