A 29-year-old man knifed repeatedly in the face and neck just outside Golden Gate Park was the second homeless person in two months to be stabbed to death in or around the park and the third in a little more than a year, San Francisco police said Thursday.Investigators said they did not know whether there was any connection between the deaths of Brian Austin early Tuesday at 47th Avenue and Fulton Street, on the northwest edge of the park, and the slaying last month of a 44-year-old man by the Polo Field nearby.
They are also trying to determine whether there is any connection to either killing and the death Sept. 8, 2006, of Matthew Lister, who was stabbed to death as he slept in the Shakespeare Garden in the eastern part of the park. Lister, 45, had recently lost his job and was living on the streets, having struggled for years with alcohol. His slaying is unsolved.
"We are certainly aware of the fact that there are similarities, " said Inspector Mike Johnson, acting head of the police homicide unit. "In the location, the homelessness and the method of death."
