Caltrans reopened all lanes on northbound U.S. Highway 101 in Redwood City today, two days after an accident caused a tanker trailer to overturn and spill its load of gasoline across the freeway. The entire freeway was shut down Wednesday around 9 p.m. so Caltrans crews could repave the two right lanes, where the asphalt had deteriorated after being saturated with gas from the 2,000 gallons that spilled in Tuesday's crash. Traffic is moving normally this morning.
The gasoline truck was struck from behind near Maple Avenue about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday by a minivan whose driver said she had been cut off by another car. One of the truck's two tankers overturned, leaking gas onto the freeway and into a storm drain.
