A week-old blaze east of Morgan Hill in Henry W. Coe State Park has destroyed three hunting cabins since it began on Labor Day but has not affected any ranger's homes, authorities said today.About 300 firefighters are working on finishing the last 2 miles of a fire line, which when completed will encircle the blaze. That job is expected to be finished late this afternoon, authorities said.
A total of 1,500 firefighters are now battling the Lick Fire, down from a peak of 2,000 last week.
The fire, which is now 95 percent contained, has burned 47,760 acres and destroyed two outbuildings in addition to the hunting cabins since it was started by a trash-barrel burn Sept. 3. Fighting the fire has cost an estimated $7.8 million. Assessing the damage has been a slow process because of the remoteness of the destroyed buildings.
