Authorities shot and killed a mountain lion that was hiding in the backyard of a Los Gatos home Monday night. The animal had been seen several times in the area around the 14000 block of Lora Drive, where it was killed Monday evening, said state Department of Fish and Game spokesman Harry Morse. He said police and a Fish and Game warden had decided to shoot the cat after determining it was posed a public safety risk, as the neighborhood includes a large apartment complex where children play outside.
Morse said the warden was called around 4:30 p.m. and arrived about 30 minutes later. By the time he met with a police sergeant and they set up lights to get a view of the lion, it was dark.
The cougar "was in the backyard next to the bikes and the pool," Morse said. "Behind it was a 6-foot fence, and it was on the ground in some bushes."
