The operator of the Crandall Canyon coal mine where six men are missing and three rescuers died last week delivered a grim assessment Sunday, saying "It's likely that these miners may not be found."Rob Moore, vice president of Utah Energy which operates the mine, said rescuers will spend the next 2.5 days drilling a 5th borehole in an attempt to locate the miners. He said it would take 58 hours if all goes well to drill the hole, more than 2,000 feet deep.
But he was not optimistic about chances for success, saying the results of the 4th borehole completed Saturday showed there was not enough oxygen to support life in that section of the mine. He said it is "likely we'll see similar results" at the site of the latest hole.
"The results of the fourth borehole are disappointing," Moore said.
