A mental patient who was shot at his home on Wednesday by Santa Rosa police has died from his injuries, authorities said today. The 24-year-old man, whose name was not released, was shot after threatening three police officers with a large kitchen knife and ignoring their warnings to stop as he approached them, Santa Rosa police said.
Shouting "slashing, slashing," the man said he would kill the officers and came within a few feet of them before one officer, Michael Heiser, fired four shots that hit the suspect, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the incident.
The man died at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday, about six hours after the incident at 531 A Street in Santa Rosa, according to the sheriff's department. Before shooting the man, officers fired a Taser gun at him, but that didn't slow him down, and even after he was shot with bullets, the man fought with police, the sheriff's department said.
