A 36-year-old man shot to death Tuesday night while driving his car in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood was identified today, police said.Letalitonu (Tony) Ia was found on the 1000 block of Fitzgerald Avenue. Police said several witnesses called 911 just before 10:20 p.m. to report the sound of gunshots and a car speeding from the area.
Ia drove about half a block after he was shot, then got out of his car and collapsed, police homicide Lt. John Murphy said. He died about six hours later at San Francisco General Hospital.
Ia was sentenced to six years in federal prison in 1998 under a law aimed at targeting felons who are caught with weapons, records show. He had no criminal record in recent years.
