A man was shot to death in Richmond tonight, bringing to 43 the number of homicides in the industrial East Bay city - exceeding last year's total of killings by one.The tragic new mark was set despite an effort earlier this year by protesters setting up "tent cities" in Richmond's toughest neighborhoods, and stepped-up efforts by the police force to tamp down gang violence.
The latest victim was found in an apartment in the 400 block of South Ninth Street at 7 p.m. His attacker or attackers used a pistol to kill him, said Richmond Police Sgt. Lori Curran.
Just minutes before, at 6:52 p.m.., investigators had been called to a shooting scene three blocks away in the 300 block of Sixth Street. They found a man there lying, shot but alive, on the pavement, and had been working the scene for five minutes when police dispatchers got the call about the fatal shooting on Ninth Street.
