Skiers always say the first run of the day is the hardest, but it will be a long time before anybody tops the first run that Patrick Frost and Christopher Gerwig took over the weekend at Alpine Meadows.The two buddies started out on top of the mountain in a blizzard, went down a canyon in whiteout conditions before discovering that they were lost, huddled together in a snow cave in subfreezing temperatures, and traversed 7 miles along a river the next day before spending another night in a snow cave - all without any nourishment except for a couple of energy bars between them and melted snow to drink.
The nightmare run ended at 10:40 a.m. Monday when a rescue helicopter spotted the two San Franciscans struggling through heavy snow in a place appropriately called Upper Hell Hole Reservoir, about 10 miles from the ski resort.
And nobody even checked their lift tickets.
