A former worker at a Los Gatos health clinic who argued she was subjected to racial harassment, including offensive words, has been awarded $44,000 in a settlement, federal officials said today.The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the Arthritis and Orthopedic Medical Clinic on behalf of Tomeika Broussard, 30, an African American file clerk who said she had been subjected to racial slurs by her supervisor and a co-worker.
The commission found that Broussard's supervisor had used slurs and epithets including "code words" such as "reggin" (a racial epithet spelled backward). A co-worker made comments about African Americans being "nappy heads" and "ghetto," the lawsuit said.
The federal agency said that Broussard complained about the harassment, the clinic fired her.
