The dramatic climb in fuel prices tapered off last week, the government said Monday, a sign that the worst could be over.The nationwide average price of gasoline rose just 1.8 cents last week to $2.577 a gallon, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported Monday. That's 7.3 cents more than a year ago.
Before the latest report, the increase was triple what's normal this time of year. The nationwide average had leapt 39.4 cents since the run-up began Feb. 5, vs. an average 14.4-cent increase for similar periods in 2000-2006, according to EIA data. The average price of gasoline had jumped as much as 12.2 cents in a week in the recent period.
Until this week, in fact, prices had been on track to blow through the $3 mark as a nationwide average before the end of April.
