Firefighters had a close call early Monday as they worked to keep a wildfire away from homes in the foothills east of Los Angeles.Winds, which had been fairly tame, unexpectedly kicked up, sending flames within yards of several houses on the northern edge of the city of Sierra Madre.
But firefighters fought back the blaze and watered down embers that drifted onto a few roofs.
Authorities said no homes have been lost in the 400-acre wildfire that started Saturday afternoon near the city of Sierra Madre and the Angeles National Forest. At least 1,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes.
