Punishing hot and humid weather blanketed wide swaths of the nation Tuesday, a pattern expected to continue through the weekend in parts of the South and Midwest.The National Weather Service issued excessive-heat warnings in several states today. Central and southern New Jersey counties, for example, will be under an excessive heat warning or heat advisory from noon till 8 p.m. Central Indiana is under a similar advisory.

Also today, high humidity will make it feel like 110 degrees in Cincinnati. Dayton public schools are closed because many buildings lack air conditioning.
