An allegedly drunken driver is in critical condition after he crashed his car into a natural gas wellhead in rural Solano County, causing an explosion visible for miles, authorities said today.Michael Bellavia, 34, of Shasta Lake, ran off Binghampton Road near Dixon around 10 a.m. Monday, said Officer M.A. Williford of the California Highway Patrol. Bellavia suffered third-degree burns over one-third of his body when the wellhead he hit exploded.
Emergency crews found Bellavia walking away from the scene, and took him by helicopter to the UC Davis Regional Burn Center.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control by about 2:30 p.m.
