Local crabbers were stunned Wednesday after a decision by the Department of Fish and Game left open to commercial and recreational fishermen much of the traditional Dungeness ground in the ocean outside the Golden Gate.With their season set to begin Thursday, and with at least two large commercial crab boats believed to be from out of state already dropping pots, local fishermen who thought their season would be closed faced a difficult decision of whether to bring in Dungeness for the holiday demand.
"I don't have a clue what we're going to do," said Larry Collins, president of the San Francisco Crab Boat Owners Association. "We don't know if any of the buyers even want the crab that are out there."
Collins and other local crabbers were hoping for at least a temporary closure of the season from Point Arena in Mendocino County to the Mexico border in the wake of last week's Cosco Busan fuel spill.
