A San Francisco couple accused in the bludgeoning death of their roommate appeared in court this morning for the first time since they were arrested in Mexico and extradited back to California.Richard Carelli and his girlfriend Michele Pinkerton, both 38, did not enter a plea during their five-minute hearing in front of Judge Garrett Wong in San Francisco Superior Court. Carelli is charged with murder and Pinkerton is accused of being an accessory to murder.
The case sparked widespread interest because the body of the roommate, 49-year-old Leonard Milo Hoskins, languished in a van that was in police custody for eight days before officers searched the vehicle and found the corpse.
Hoskins was killed in December, authorities said, but Carelli's van was not towed from the Mission Terrace home where the three lived until Jan. 24, after a neighbor told police he had seen Carelli hit Hoskins over the head with a piece of lumber and then drag him inside the home.
