The East Bay hunkered down Sunday and braced for commute bedlam.At kids' soccer games, inside Peet's Coffee, in line at Trader Joe's, nearly everywhere, people were trying to decipher the MacArthur Maze wreckage and how they might avoid the coming chaos, especially on the homeward commute.
"It'll be a nightmare, an absolute nightmare," said Ron Chand-ler of Oakland, who usually takes BART to San Francisco and is anticipating big crowds on the trains. "It really underscores how vulnerable we are."
Commuters who already take BART said they were prepared for packed trains and full parking lots. Drivers plotted alternate routes using obscure side streets and back roads, hoping thousands of other motorists don't have the same ideas. Some casual carpoolers decided they might as well stay home.
