Colorado children with only one legal parent would be able to gain a second parent if the state Senate approves a long-needed change in adoption laws already OK'd by the House on a bipartisan vote of 39 to 25.House Bill 1330 is now in the Senate's State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. We urge the committee and the full Senate to approve the bill.
HB 1330 simply allows a child to be adopted by a second qualified adult parent upon the consent of a single parent if that child has no other legal parent.
In the case of a single mother, for example, the bill would allow the child's grandfather or grandmother to legally adopt their grandchild - thus allowing the child to be added to the adopting grandparent's health insurance as well as qualifying for other benefits.
