Three pygmy killer whales were stranded at North Myrtle Beach on Wednesday and two were so sick they had to be put to death, a biologist said.At midday Wednesday, a female was still stranded, but officials were trying to keep her alive as they searched for a fourth whale reported in the area that may be her calf, said Wayne McFee of the federal Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
"We may be able to get him back together with the mom and let them go," he said.
Pygmy whales are toothed whales about the size of dolphins — 7 to 8 feet long — and can weigh 400 to 600 pounds.
