The bones of a prehistoric camel were discovered Friday at the site of a future Mesa Wal-Mart.Brad Archer, curator of the geology museum at Arizona State University, hurried out to the site near Lindsay and McKellips roads Friday when he got the news that John Babiarz, owner of Greenfield Citrus Nursery, was carefully excavating bones found at the bottom of a hole dug for an ornamental citrus tree.
The bones are estimated to be about 10,000 years old.
"There's no question that this is a camel. These creatures walked the land here until about 8,000 years ago, when the same event that wiped out a great deal of mammal life took place," Archer said as he stood at the edge of the hole where Babiarz worked with a trowel.
