The U.S. House took a welcome stand for open government this week, passing four bills designed to lower barriers between citizens and government information.We urge the Senate to follow the House's example - and President Bush to back down from veto threats.
The first measure, HR 1309, would make it easier for the public to use the Freedom of Information Act to request government records. Administration policies have made it harder to obtain such documents.
Another measure, HR 1255, would roll back administration efforts to limit public access to the papers of past presidents, and HR 1254 would require release of information about presidential library donors.
