The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to hear from a Zimbabwean opposition leader Tuesday on the country's post-election violence and humanitarian crisis. Tendai Biti, secretary-general for the Movement for Democratic Change, will present evidence that the party believes shows Zimbabwe's deteriorating political climate and a government trying to hold on to power, said George Sibotshiwe, a spokesman for MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai."We are trying to find a way forward," he told CNN.
The presentation comes a month after Zimbabwe held presidential and parliamentary elections. Electoral officials have not released results from the presidential race.
After initial results from last month's election were counted, the opposition declared that it had won a majority of parliamentary seats, but President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party complained of irregularities. A recount may be completed this week.
