Iran's Foreign Ministry has said that tougher U.S. sanctions are "doomed to fail" and accused Washington of adopting confrontational policies amid simmering tensions over Tehran's refusal to halt its nuclear program. Washington imposed stiff sanctions against elements of Iran's military and a number of Iranian banks and companies on Thursday, accusing them of support for nuclear proliferation and terror-related activities."The Iranian regime's abilities to pursue nuclear and ballistic missile programs in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions depends on its access to international, commercial, and financial systems," said U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
But Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini, quoted by Iran's state news agency IRNA, said the sanctions were "ineffective."
Meanwhile, speaking Thursday in Kuwait, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi warned that any military attack on Iran would be met with a "crushing response."
