President Bush will ask Congress to give more than $8 billion to Afghanistan to help its security forces and assist in reconstructing the war-ravaged nation, the White House said Thursday.
That's more than half the $14.2 billion in aid the United States has already given to Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 that toppled the repressive Taliban.
Three quarters of this year's budget request is for Afghan security forces; one fourth for reconstruction, a senior administration official said on condition of anonymity because Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was to announce details of the aid at a NATO meeting today in Brussels.
