Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Monday dissolved the Palestinian national security council in an effort to further isolate Hamas in Gaza, according to a Palestinian political source.The council was formed by the former Fatah-Hamas unity government. Hamas leader Ismail Haniya, who had served as Palestinian prime minister until he was dismissed last Thursday by Abbas, held the position of deputy chairman of the council.
The source said a new council may be formed in its place but no final decision on that has been made.
On Sunday, the Palestinian leadership was further split as President Mahmoud Abbas swore in a temporary cabinet for his emergency government, a move described by a Hamas official as "illegal" and outside Abbas' authority.
