The number of people filing new claims for unemployment insurance in the latest week rose more than expected to its highest level in five weeks, the Labor Department said Thursday.
First time claims rose 10,000 to 329,000 in the week ended December 30, the department said. That's higher than the 320,000 new claims economists had expected and the highest level since the week ended November 25.
The four-week average of first time claims rose 1,250 to 317,500. Economists prefer the four-week average because it smoothes out fluctuations in the weekly data.
