Richard DeKaser predicts that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged all year. But after that, it's anyone's guess.While the economy has slowed, a situation that could point to an interest rate cut, "We've got a war on inflation that's still not yet won," says DeKaser, chief economist at in Cleveland. The Fed's main tool against inflation is higher interest rates.
DeKaser's uncertainty is worth noting. Last year he was the most accurate forecaster on USA TODAY's panel of prominent economists. He ranked first out of 41 economists who filled out the survey every quarter.
The economy is in fairly good shape, DeKaser notes, arguing that the USA is "well into a soft landing, Goldilocks scenario" — not too hot, not too cold.
