European stocks opened slightly lower on Tuesday, amid more worries over the impact the downturn in the US mortgage market may have on the global economy.London's main FTSE index was down 0.7%, or 42 points, to 6,177 in early trading, while Frankfurt's Dax lost 0.6%, or 43 points, falling to 7,432.
It came after a mixed finish to Asian stocks, with Japan's main index closing higher while Australia's fell.
Sub-prime loan defaults in the US have led to fears of a global credit crisis.
